There will be a short business meeting before the presentation.

This month’s meeting will introduce a new book that takes a varied look into the Indigenous peoples of the Cuyahoga Valley, from pre-contact cultures to today’s Native American community. The works of nine researchers were edited into a composite contemporary presentation of Native Americans who preceded us that called our valley home. Peg Bobel and Linda G. Whitman who edited these works into the book “Native Americans of the Cuyahoga Valley” will tell of this years long project.

Our very own Richard Best will give us a glimpse of what medicine was like in the 1800s. Richard studied texts of the time, conferred with a variety of medical personal and even attended two autopsies. He will tell us about various instruments, splints, and medicines including how those that were in pill form
were rolled. He will be using and displaying vintage medical instruments in his demonstrations. Most of these are over 150 years old! Richard will also delve into the then prevailing medical theories and how through experience and science medicine began to evolve.

Although this is a heavy subject it is safe for kids and Richard will keep it lively and upbeat.

Beth Roose will tell us the story behind her book: Tales Of A Civil War Runner.

Discover the incredible story of Isaac Roose, Beth’s 4th great-grandfather, who served as a Runner for General Grant during the Civil War. He was instrumental in delivering critical messages alongside General Rutherford B. Hayes regarding the Confederate naval fleet’s whereabouts and played a key role in protecting the Union’s ship, The Water Witch.

As a special treat, we will showcase actual White House china used by Presidents Grant, Garfield, and Hayes, along with pieces from President Abraham Lincoln!

Don’t miss this chance to dive into a fascinating chapter of our nation’s history!

Everyone will go home with one of Beth’s books.

Fall is here and it’s time for our mandatory Annual Members Meeting, Monday, Nov 18^th.  Social time from 5:30 pm to 6:45 pm. Annual NHS Review and Agenda at 7:00 pm. PLEASE come to discuss issues regarding the future of the NHS and the artifacts that we have to relocate.

The October meeting is in honor of our agricultural heritage and the Northampton Hill and Vale Gardenn Club. It will be the next of an on and off again series by Summit County Master Gardener Volunteers. Our presenter will be Lee Paulson on History and Horticulture of Spring Bulbs

Our required Annual Meeting will be next month, November 21st. We’d appreciate all members to attend so that we can update everyone at one time and transact business as needed.

Howland Davis from the Summit County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will give a presentation on the Chapter’s services and benefits. Mr. Davis is the immediate Past President of the chapter, the editor of a newsletter, the historian (brand new) and have been the corresponding secretary.  He has been a member since April 2003.
